23rd Scouts · A neighbourhood remembrance project

You scanned
a poppy.
Meet the person.

Every poppy marks a life connected to a Toronto family address. Read their story, see what has been preserved, and carry their name forward.

01 / Why this exists

Names first.
People always.

This project began with Patrick Cain’s map of Toronto families connected to people who served and died in the Second World War.

We paired that historical source with the Canadian Virtual War Memorial maintained by Veterans Affairs Canada. The map helps us find the neighbourhood connection; VA helps us tell the military story. We keep both visible when they differ.

02 / The people

Remember
their names.

Start with a person. Browse the neighbourhood stories below, and open the VA record for photographs, clippings, memorial details, and more.

03 / Behind the stories

Careful research.
Human purpose.

Addresses come from the historical Toronto map extract, first published by journalist Patrick Cain. Military identity, rank, unit, and date are checked against Veterans Affairs Canada’s Canadian Virtual War Memorial. The stories are a starting point, not a replacement for the records.

04 / Keep showing up

Help the 23rd
do more good.

The 23rd Scouts is a local youth group. Our charitable projects turn curiosity into service — helping young people learn, contribute, and care for their community.

If this project moved you, support the work behind it. Your time, encouragement, or contribution helps us keep building useful things for the neighbourhood.
